Hi there, I've made it safe and sound, and I worried about everything for nothing!
As i said before I totally lucked out on that flight direct to Mumbai, although Air Canada is not my favorite airline. After I wrote last, I checked with Jet AIR about my new flight and they told me that aircanada hadn't booked me in the computer. She gave me a hand written ticket only. I was so mad....Thankfully, Jet air had 20 seats they reserve for things like this and I was lucky to get on.
I landed in Mumbai at about 11:30 am, and breezed through customs and immigration, picked up my luggage, exchanged some money and got a taxi to meet Chris. I don't know what I was thinking before I left, but i was so incredibly nervous, but as I left the airport, It was not much different from Cambodia/Loas, in terms of people, smells, etc. All I could think when i was in the cab, was I can't believe I am here ( after sitting in Winnipeg for 4 hours before I left I really thought I wasn't going to get here!) and I can't believe this taxi driver is driving so crazy!! I tell you, people risk their lives crossing the street in this country! There were many times i had visions of getting side swiped by other vehicles, but I arrived to the Gateway of India no problem. All I thought was Chris better be here. And he was, thank God. He was sitting on the ground looking tired, and exausted.
So wandered to a store, bought some water, and sat down for a bit, decided what to do. Neither of us wanted to sit in Mumbai longer than we had to so we decided to take a night bus to Goa (beach). We found an air conditioned restaurant (Mcdonalds!!! haha) and had a coke, Chris had some kind of strange chicken burger!
We walked to a ticket place and got a bus ticket, unfortunatly the sleepers were all sold so we had to get regular seats. I couln't imagine sleeping very well, but I managed to sleep a bit.
Anyways, we got to Goa at 6:00 am, after leaving Mumbai at 6:30 pm. My Gravol wore off at about 4:00 AM so I was sick for the last couple hours of the trip. We went to the bus station and had a bite to eat, dry toast works wonders!
So we cought another bus, then another (which was so crammed full of people -seating for 30, adn standing room for 10 the sign said. I think there was about 40 standing, but they kept stopping and picking up more!
We got to Arambol, the most northerly beach in Goa, at about 10:30. We got a room, had a shower, lunch and then headed to the beach. Man is it HOT here. I'm guessing mid 30's.
We had great plans to see a movie last night and an ELVIS impersonater (not much for evening entertainment) but we thougth we should nap first. haha, we went for a nap about 4:00 and woke up at 3:30 in the morning! we were able to fall asleep again and woke up at 8:30. I think my jet lag is gone.
Today so far we've been to the beach for a while, walked for lunch (Chris spotted a buffet!) and after this we'll head to the beach again.
Tomorrow we're going to head south proabbly 1-2 hours and spend a day or two in palolem, another beach town in Goa. Its great here , although the waves are pretty big, making it hard to swim. There are kids coming up to as every 5 minutes telling me I am so white. (well, red now) and they are selling sarongs and tacky jewelrry,
Let me tell you though, I think i will have no problem filling my bag with stuff--not the tacky jewellry though! More stuff here to buy than you can even imagine.
I've only seen one rat so far (dead) and no cockroaches! that was a fear of mine, but I'm sure i'll see them yet.
Well I'm off to get Chris from the room, and then going to sit on the beach for a few more hours!
Talk to you soon!
