well the bad part...when i left that ocean town i prob went about 80 kms as the crow flys and took me almost 5 1/2 hrs. Brutal. I hopped bus then got off at highway junction then after 30 mins of waiting for other bsu i hopped in a taxi loaded with locals heading to the ferry then waited 40 mins for next ferry. Took 1 1/2 hrs, then took bus as soon as i landed on island. Crazy how slow it went, oh well i am at awesome place.
Isla de Ometepe, an island in cetre of huge lake. It is so relaxed here, hardly any vehicles , most people use bicycles, horseback or the odd truck loaded full with locals in the back. Hichhiking is quite commone and safe on island and I´ve hitched twice already. Quite fun in back of truck talking to locals in my broken spanish but it is slowly gettin better
Well i´ve had 6 meals so far and all come with gallo pinot, even 1 breakfast which is cooked rice w red beans. I am actually starting to like it and the food is amazing here. I am gonna get soooo fat. Last nights meal was fried chicken breast, tortillas, rice and beans, salad and glass of coke. Huge plate and was 1.75 and delicious
Tonight i had same meal but with pork and many restaurants have a little open fire pit on legs they cook meat on street as u wait for it. But i had fried shredded plaintains. Tasty!
And my hotel.....I walked into room and floor was shining plus the bathroom smelled like disenfectant and nice fancy tiles. Totally clean sheets on bed with a towel and top sheet and in bathroom was 2 extra towels and new bars of soap. 3.50 per night. Unbelievable... There is about 15 rooms and 4 cute lil cabins in the back. Sadly, there is myself and 1 older german couple in their late 40´s and today they checked out so i got whole hotel to myself. I wish someone was here to enjoy with me. It is so clean
I feel bad for owners so i bought one of their expensive beers to help out!
This island is very relaxed, too much actually as at about 10:00 pm the whole town shuts down except for a bar or two.
Yesterday went for walk to beach about 45 mins. The entire way was huge plaintain plantations (type of starchy banana u must cook) on both sides with birds singing and lil bluish green lizards hiding in the rock wall bordering them, got to the beach and it was totally deserted i couldn´t believe i had it to myself but waves were quite high actually
then last night i met this crazy drunk local guy on street, he annoyed me and i was about to leave then he brought me to this booze can sort of after hours bar in this local guys house........full of locals drinking there and 1 local midget woman. Well, I got kinda ticked off as everyone seemed to be asking for me to fill their cups with beer. Surprise surprise! But at about 2:30 am when I left I had bought 5- 1 litre bottles of beer a pack of smokes and 1 enchilada cost about 9.60 and i didn´t mind as they were poorer than me, and i did speak spanish all night and people would join the table to listen and ask me about Canada
Crazy was some 14 year old kid passed out on a couch when i walked in and the owners mom came in every once in a while looked around at all the drunk people in there,Shook her head and left in disgust..............was cool lil place. I´ve never seen a fridge so packed with beer, beer, and more beer right to the top..............i am to meet people there again tonight but unsure if i will.
I had to wake poor security guard up at my hotel as whole place was locked up and he was sleeping. Although i am only guest now, maybe someone came in last 4 hours since i went on a walk
Yeah slept in today till 11:00,then went to a park, sprawled on a blanket and read book then went for 4 hour-ish walk . The roads are desserted except for odd person on horse or bike. Funny too, all the loacals just seem to sit in front of their houses and watch the world go by, doesn t anyone work here? sorry keys are mislabelled on keyboard and i cannot seem to get puctuations working_
I think the peoples biggest worry is chasing their neghbors pig away from eating their flowers as today i sure saw a fat old nicaragaun man run, swear, yell at a pig. I laughed mucho!!
People here are so nice-friendly actually, and it is cool seeing pigs-chickens-goats-cows just meadering wherever they want to. kinda like India, but i didn´t expect it here.
This island is shaped like an hour glass and has 2 volcanoes at each end, 1 still active and had little eruption in November ´07 I hear. It is very peaceful, and everyone seems to sure smile at tourists.
Have i said how good the food is? yikes, it is really tasty, i cannot believe it.
hmmmmmmmmmm i am sure there is stuff i cannot think to write of actually i´ve been quite busy last 3 days meetin many people and just enjoying the lazyness of the island
With my lazyness, I fit right in!
Well think tomorrow I´ll leave for other end of island, man my hotel is so clean and nice but i gotta move on . May try to volunteer on an organic veggie farm read of, yet I think I´d just be hauling water or weeding or some crappy labour intense job, not that i expect to run the show or anything! It is at 6- 10 am which also sucks.
we´ll see, Well, off to center park usually locals mill around and food stalls there and boys playing volley ball and basketball which I watched last night, they invited me to play, maybe tonight i will?
Unsure next few days if there will be internet if i go work on the farm.
I am glad to pick a hot country but maybe i picked toooo hot a country as during the day it is just cooking here. I have quite a pink tan already.
Take care, sawka
