well lots new since last email. After emailing i went to read travel book in chai shop(outdoor). a man came to talk to me and bought me chai...then an hour late i went to total local rest.......and invited 2 men to join me........we talked by hand gestures and at the end they tried to pay 4 my meal.. So many nice people in India. Sooo many , i don't wanna leave
Decided to treat myself to sleeping in bed and not up all night on bus or train rattling around in a seat or sleeper.....next day got up at 715 am . Bus leaves at 730.......rushed into street got rickshaw to bus station. As we were pulling up bus was leaving so driver sped after dodging people/cows/other rickshaws as i had 1/2 my body out the side yelling for bus to stop..........was fun. Kinda like scene for movie! haha!
Long, hot, dusty bus ride (6 hours) but sat next to teacher man who spoke english. We shared snacks(i shared cigs) and after 3 hours he was getting out ,but invited me to his village/school. I almost went but politely said no and carried on Jaiselmer. How briliant After hours of riding through desert from miles away I could see an enormous fort emerging from the sand huge, like something from a movie. and old<1200> and loads of history well.
Did i get a sweet room.........95/night, and as i checked in 2 young boys(6-9 shoulda been in school!) changed sheets and mopped floor, sadly kid mopped bathroom floor first then rest of room w/o rinsing mop but how could i complain or stop him? Even got free cup of chai for check in and town map. I walked to bank to cash travellers check and was told to sit in managers office he would help me. 25 minutes later, still sitting(india is soooo slow and frustrating at times......crazy) So i got frustrated and left. Walked to tourist station and booked 4 hour tour of temple's in Thar desert (may go again in 2 hours actually) for 3.12 1/2. Nice tour but me only white person. These 2 older(40's-50's) Indian banker men kinda took me under their wing as a son and guided me around..........at 1 temple free for locals .50 for tourist they were actually arguing that I shouldn't pay to see temple......nice guys. I paid though. 1 different driver came to me and said " u buy at tourist centre smart tourist!" So i asked the bankers what they paid at their fancy hotel for tour...........over 9.00 Ha for once i didn't get scammed and actually felt good(oh boy today i'll get scammed real good probably after getting that deal.....) When i told them price of my hotel they shook their heads smiled then laughed they probably knew what 40 rps/gets , But fine for me......only for sleeping.
Then we went out the Thar dessert . Awesome. Not as nice as the sahara desert was in africa , but still unique. Desert people had eloborate dress (bright colours/jewellry..all for tourist dollars for photo's but nice to look) camels everywhere and watched sun set. Everything was pure golden. Got back and went to restaurant.........now what would u be eating if u ordered palak paneer..........myself i had no idea(remember i said I randomley order off menu as all vegetarian) well I had this greenish bowl arrive....turns out unfermented cheese w/spicy spinach and cream sauce..........it was sooooo good. Hot though! After got a beer and sat on roof of hotel to see stars. So pretty and about a million, plus they look different when you are 1/2 way around the world. Walked aroudn but town quite dead at 1030 pm . Everything closed but food stands. Today slept till 900am and walked around talking to locals.........near tourist area guy wants 50 rps for a shave. Ripoff! and wouldn't deal down(a shave costing more then a hotel room???? that is a scam!) I walked totally away from the fort(tourist area) and saw the real India Not tourist india. I prefer this . Got shave for 10 rps , the whole time i thought must be language barrier as took 1/2 hour including face message and neck and scalp rubbing....but nope, handed him ten rps(.25) and he smiled thanks(wow 2 good deals in a row, 3 w/room i sure gonna get screwed on something yet! gotta happen).
Went to totally dark dingy restaurant only Hindi lang. on sign and no talking of english by anyone.......got a tin plate w/yogurt sauce, curried veg's/ lentils and all the flat breads you want.............65 and filling! After i had cigarette outside and notice that cook was breaking up cow patties w/hands to feed the fire, then 2 minutes later grabbing the flat breads with same hand as they were done cooking oh well i'd already eaten and it didn't kill me.........Don't think some of you reading this should come to India....hahaah. Shame, it is so nice though and wonderful people......just not the cleanest. But i think we are all kinda a bit too much high class/fussy back home . a bit too much.
well 1250 noon now and i am going to walk to fort then maybe head to desert again on tour
(not buying at prince hotel for 9.00 that's for sure). Having great time. Sad I, thought today was Tuesday but Thursday a man told me.
take care everyone, sawka
Sadly tonight I must take night travel and must decide where to go. In the middle of nowhere in this dessert town really close to pakistan border.....i was going to go but travel agent said i need a visa so that plan is out. Oh what to do. To get going further away and see more.......or slowly head back to Bombay to meet laura in 9 days.......hmmmmm? tonight's gonna suck though up all night. oh well, i am making lots of travel for the 7 or 8 days i've been in india. yesterday w/in 5 hours i'd seen entire highlights except for fort and I actually almost thought of leaving for next town. This crazy pace must be slowed down!
I don't want to come home!
